Why this happens

Texts from parents carry decades of subtext that ADHD adults often spend disproportionate time decoding. The brain runs simulations: did she mean she's worried about me? Is the sister-comparison a dig? What's "anyway" doing there? Most of the time the message is benign + the brain is generating noise. Sometimes it's not — and it helps to have someone else read it. Outsourcing the decode is faster than the spiral and easier than asking a friend.

The example we'll start with

Just got a text from my mom: "Just thinking about you. Hope work is going well? Saw your sister's news on Facebook, so happy for her! Anyway xoxo"
