How to stop quitting on day 8 of every productivity system

The day-8 quit is so consistent it deserves a name. You buy the new planner / start the new system / install the new app. Days 1-3: euphoria. Days 4-6: maintained but with effort. Day 7: missed it. Day 8: system is dead, you feel bad, you're already shopping for the next system.

The mechanism is the dopamine novelty cycle. The new system gives you a hit because it's new. By day 6, the novelty is consumed. The system now has to support itself on actual usefulness, and most systems can't. The full breakdown of the chemistry is in ADHD dopamine seeking explained.

What actually works

Pick a system you've already abandoned. Not a new one. The one with the deepest scar tissue is often the right one — the reason you quit it gives you the data on what to fix.

Start at "below the minimum effective dose." If the system asks for 30 minutes a day, do 4 minutes a day. The system isn't designed for 4 minutes, but you are. Use the system for 4 minutes for 21 days. Then expand.

Plan for the day-8 break. When (not if) you miss day 7-8, the system needs to have a "you missed two days" page. If it punishes you, the system fails. What doesn't work
